March 2025

winter doldrums, events, and a song for you

I ran away to a greenhouse for a day and didn’t want to leave

Hello readers,

I don’t know about you, but for me this past month has been filled with entirely too much snow, ice, and ennui. For only being 28 days, February sure did manage to feel incredibly long. But now March is here, and the sign in front of the greenhouse down the road informs me that spring is only three weeks away, so that’s something.

Let’s have a newsletter!

Happenings…

  • I was thrilled to see that Locus magazine had a nice review of SASM in their January issue! It’s now available to read online here.

  • On March 15th I will be chatting with Rebecca Podos at the launch for Homegrown Magic in Glastonbury! Come join us to discuss all things queer cozy fantasy and D&D.

  • I will be at the Bow Market Book Fair on March 22nd! I don’t have all the details yet but I will update on Instagram once I know more about signing times and the like.

  • Evergreen reminder that if you want a signed copy of Sorcery and Small Magics, you can get one from River Bend Bookshop! Just leave a note in your order specifying you would like your book signed. If you want it personalized, note that too!

From the Writing Playlist…

I have a pretty epic playlist going for book 2 that I will eventually organize into something more curated, but for now I thought it would be fun to share a single song every now and then in the newsletter. No context. You can make of these offerings what you will (just know that the songs I listen to while writing are more about capturing a mood than anything very literal).

This month’s offering is: I Follow Rivers by Lykke Li.

Eyeball Food…

a formative read

Books: I mentioned last month that I was gravitating toward sci fi, and that trend has continued! I flew through the Young Miles Omnibus by Lois McMaster Bujold and it had me kicking my feet and squealing with glee at several points. It’s a space opera full of war games, wit, questionable decisions, and complicated characters. I can’t wait to continue with the series. One of my goals this year is to reread old favorites, so I picked up Dealing With Dragons, the first book in Patririca C. Wrede’s Enchanted Forest Chronicles and was so happy to find it just as charming and whimsical as I remembered. Speaking of whimsey, a friend recommended I read Yield Under Great Persuasion by Alexandra Rowland. It is a wonderful little romance novel that is just as much about learning to love yourself as it is about loving someone else. Last but certainly not least, I devoured Michelle Wong’s House of the Beast. Release date isn’t until August but I was lucky enough to get my hands on an advance copy and it is just such a gorgeous book, full of monsters of all kinds. Go preorder it!

Shows: When times are tough, I often return to the familiar. Which means that I have unexpectedly found myself rewatching the BBC’s Merlin series. While there’s a lot that frustrates me with the pacing of this show (especially as it went on), there’s something so sincere about the delivery that I love it anyway. It provides exactly the type of entertainment that I need right now—a bit silly, but heartfelt. I’ve also been on a Jane Austen kick, rewatching the 1995 adaptation of Persuasion and the 2020 version of Emma. I love the quietness of the former and the bright colors of the later. As for new content, I’ve started watching The Newsreader. It’s a little stressful (having once had a radio show, any mention of “going live” is enough to give me remembrance jitters) and a lot addictive. I am preemptively sad that AMC only has the first season available because I know I will want to continue.

That’s all for now, but there are a few secret things that I should hopefully be able to share by next month’s newsletter!
